同济公共卫生学院的历史可溯源至上个世纪1907年宝隆博士创办上海德文医学堂时，即有由德国江哥斯博士讲授公共卫生学课程，后于1913年开设卫生学馆，其后虽迭经历史变迁，卫生学馆仍以它顽强的生命力保存下来并发展着。1951年，全国高等学校院系调整，随医学院由上海内迁至武汉。1953年，正式招收卫生学专业本科生暨建立卫生系，是全国最早成立的6个卫生系之一。1986年更名为同济医科大学公共卫生学院，2000年5月高校合并，华中科技大学组建，更名为华中科技大学同济医学院公共卫生学院。
    学院现有6个系，2个研究所，1个教学实验中心：流行病与卫生统计学系、劳动卫生与环境卫生学系、儿少卫生与妇幼保健学系、营养与食品卫生学系、卫生毒理学系、社会医学与卫生事业管理系；环境保护部武汉环境医学研究所、卫生部社会医学研究所；预防医学教学实验中心。拥有具备国家评价资质中心3个：农药毒理评价研究中心（四阶段评价）、保健食品功能学检测中心、环境影响评价中心（乙级证书）。拥有校内外跨学科研究中心2个：同济心理卫生研究中心和伤害预防与控制研究中心。
    学院学科建设历经沧桑五十余年，一次一个历史性的跨跃、一程一座丰碑。1981年，获首批硕士、博士学位授予权；1989年，环境卫生学（环境医学）被批准为国家重点学科；1995年，建公共卫生与预防医学一级学科博士后流动站；1997年，国家重点学科点环境卫生学科和校级重点学科劳动卫生与职业医学，通过“211工程”重点学科建设项目评审；1998年，获公共卫生与预防医学一级学科博士学位授予权；2000年，设长江学者特聘教授岗位；2001年，学科调整后的劳动卫生与环境卫生学学科点再次跻身于国家级重点学科建设行列；2002年，被批准为首批公共卫生硕士专业学位（MPH）教育试点单位；2002年，批准建国家环境保护环境与健康重点实验室；2003年，批准建环境与健康教育部重点实验室；2004年，学院“环境与健康创新研究平台”批准为国家“985工程”项目建设单位；2007年，儿少卫生与妇幼保健学科点获国家重点培育学科资格；2008年，公共卫生与预防医学学科，被评为湖北省一级重点学科；劳动卫生与环境卫生学科，被评为湖北省高校优势学科并设湖北省“楚天学者”岗位；2010年，获批省部共建“环境卫生学国家重点实验室培育基地。
    学院师资力量雄厚，拥有一支以长江学者特聘和讲座教授、国家杰出青年基金获得者、新世纪百千万人才、新世纪优秀人才、博士生导师为中坚的师资队伍。88名教师中有长江学者特聘教授1人、国务院学位委员会学科评审组成员1人、国家新世纪百千万人才1人、教育部新世纪人才8人，教授32人、副教授33人，博士生导师26人、硕士生导师63人。
    学院有较强的综合办学实力。设有：预防医学专业和妇幼卫生、卫生检验检疫、卫生统计、环境医学4个后期分化专业，形成集全日制本科、硕士、专业硕士、博士、博士后多层次的办学格局。学院预防医学专业是湖北省品牌专业和教育部特色专业建设单位，2009年预防医学实验教学中心被评为国家级示范中心建设单位。现有国家精品课程二门，省级精品课程二门，校级精品课程三门。学院始终坚持以学生为本、求真务实，不断加大教学改革的力度，努力提高教学质量。学院每年在校本科生约600～700人，在校硕士300余人，在校博士120余人。以“梦飞舞”文化艺术节和“大学生课外科技创新基地”为载体的大学生素质拓展平台已建立。通过平台，学生展现自我、激昂青春，内塑精神、外树形象，提高综合素质。近几年，有4篇博士论文获国家百篇优秀博士论文提名奖，有13篇博士论文获湖北省优秀博士论文。先后有18名本科生获省级奖，其中湖北省 “挑战杯” 大学生课外科技作品竞赛金奖1项、一等奖1项、二等奖2项、三等奖2项，本科生在国内核心期刊上发表第一作者论文十余篇。近八年，本科毕业生一次就业率达90%以上，其中考研录取率为30%～45%；研究生就业率95%～100%。
    学院瞄准预防医学国际前沿研究领域，积极开展科学研究。近五年（2006～2010年）新批准各类纵向课题604项（如：“973”项目、国家自然科学基金重点项目），横向课题624项，到位科研经费近亿元。每年发表SCI收录论文40～50篇（其中在该学科国际顶级期刊发表论文6～10篇/年，如：J Clin Oncol、 Circulation、Environ Health Perspect ），国内核心期刊发表论文250篇/年；近五年获省部级成果奖 11项（一等奖2 项、二等奖 6项）；出版教材及专著57部。
    学院始终坚持对外开放，注重发展国际间的学术交流与合作，先后与德国、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、荷兰、瑞典、日本、香港等10多个国家和地区的大学、研究所建立友好合作关系，开展广泛的学术交流和科研合作。有20多位海内外知名学者被聘为学院名誉教授、客座教授和兼职教授，派出各类出国留学人员100余人次。

                   An Introduction to the School of Public Health 
                              Tongji Medical College
 
         The history of the School of Public Health, Tongji Medical College can be traced back to 1907, when Dr. Bolon founded the Shanghai German Medical School and Dr. Junges from Germany started to teach the course of public hygiene. In 1913, the School of Hygiene was established and continued to preserve and develop with indomitable vitality even after many historical changes. In 1951, the school was relocated from Shanghai to Wuhan along with the Tongji Medical College, following the reorientation of higher educational institutions. In 1953, it officially admitted undergraduates majored in hygiene and the Department of Hygiene was established, which was one of the first six in China. In 1986, it was renamed as Public Health College of Tongji Medical University. In May 2000, it was incorporated into Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the college changed its name to the present “School of Public Health, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology”.
         The school has 6 departments: Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Occupational and Environmental Health; Maternal and Childhood Health; Nutrition and Food Health; Toxicology; and Social Medicine and Health Care Management. It has two research institutes: Institute of Environmental Medicine under Ministry of Environmental Protection at Wuhan and Institute of Social Medicine under Ministry of Public Health, and one Teaching and Experimental Laboratory Center of Preventive Medicine, and three National Qualification and Quality Evaluation Centers including the Evaluation and Research Center of Pesticide Toxicities, the Inspection Center of the Effects of Health-Care Food and the Evaluation Center of Environmental Influence, and two multi-discipline research centers: Tongji Research Center of Psychological Health and Research Center of Injury Prevention and Control.
          Over the last 50 years, the school has come through a history with enormous hardships, overcome numerous difficulties in the road to exploring medical science, and accumulating historical milestones and monuments of scholarship. These include: it was the one of the first institutions to be accredited to confer master’s and doctoral degrees in 1981; environmental health was approved as the national key discipline under Ministry of Education in 1989; post-doctoral program of  the first-class discipline public health and preventive medicine was set up in 1995; both the environmental health (the national key discipline) and the occupational medicine (the university key discipline) qualified for the key disciplines of “211 Project” in 1997; it was accredited to confer the doctoral degree in the first-class discipline public health and preventive medicine in 1998; it was selected to be one of the host institutions for the prestigious visiting professorship with the title of “Yangtze Scholars” in 2000; the new combined discipline occupational hygiene and environmental heath was approved again as national key discipline in 2001; it was accredited to be one of the first schools in history to award the master’s degree in public health (MPH) in 2002; it was approved to establish national key laboratory of environmental protection and health in 2002; it was approved to establish key laboratory of environment and health under Ministry of Education in 2003; “Innovative Research Platform of Environmental Health” qualified for the national “985 Project” in 2004; maternal and childhood health was approved as national key training discipline in 2007; public health and preventive medicine was approved as first-class key discipline of Hubei Province in 2008; occupational hygiene and environmental heath was approved as preponderant discipline among universities of higher learning in Hubei Province, and it was selected to be one of the host institutions for the professorship of “Chutian Scholar”; it was approved to set up training base for national key laboratory of environmental health by Hubei province and Ministry of Education in 2010.
          Our school has a highly competitive faculty. The core is composed of Special and Lecture Professors of Yangtze Scholars, Distinguished Young Scientists, Million Talents toward the 21st Century, Excellent Talents toward the 21st Century and doctoral supervisors. The school has 88 faculty members, including 1 Special Professor of Yangtze Scholar, 1 member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 1 New Century Million Talent, 8 New Century Excellent Talents, 32 full professors, 33 associate professors, 26 doctoral supervisors and 63 master’s supervisors.
          Our school has successful and extensive experience in teaching and administration. It possesses 4 specialties: preventive medicine, maternal and childhood health, health inspection and quarantine, biostatistics and environmental medicine. A multi-level education system composed of full-time undergraduates, master students, master students of public health, doctoral students and post doctorates has formed. Preventive medicine is the “brand” discipline of Hubei Province and it’s under special development by Ministry of Education. The experimental and research center of preventative medicine was set as a national demonstration center. Many first-class courses have been instructed in our school, 2 at the national level, 2 at the provincial level and 3 at the university level. The school adheres to the principle of student-orientated, seeking truth and practicing and reinforces teaching reform continuously to improve the quality of teaching. It has an enrollment of 600-700 undergraduates, 300 master students and 120 doctoral students. The students are educated for all-round development by participating in the “Dream Dancing” art festival and the center of extracurricular innovation of science and technology for undergraduate students. Recently, 4 doctoral dissertations were nominated as national one hundred excellent doctoral dissertations, and 13 doctoral dissertations were awarded excellent doctoral dissertations of Hubei Province. 18 undergraduate students received awards at the provincial level. These include 1 gold medal, 1 first-class award, 2 second-class awards and 2 third-class awards from the “Challenge Cup” of extracurricular scientific works contest for undergraduate in Hubei Province. The undergraduates have published more than 10 papers in national core periodicals as first authors. Over the past eight years, the first-time employment rate for undergraduates has passed 90%, of which the rate of admission to the master’s program is approximately 30%～45%. The employment rate for graduate students is about 95%～100%.
          The school aims at the most advanced international research areas in preventive medicine field, actively develops scientific research programs. During the past five years (2006-2010), the school has been awarded 604 government-funded longitudinal projects (such as “973 Project” and key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation) and 624 enterprise-funded latitudinal project, and has obtained nearly 100 million Yuan for the research funding. The school publishes 40～50 papers in SCI database each year, which include 6-10 papers published in top international journals such as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Circulation, and Environmental Health Perspectives, and published 250 papers each year in national core periodicals. It has won 11 prizes for excellent researches at ministry or provincial levels which include 2 first-class prizes and 6 second-class prizes, and has published 57 textbooks and other treatises in the past five years.
          Our school perseveres in the opening-up policy by developing international scientific communication and collaboration. We have established friendly academic relationship and conducted collaborative research projects with more than 10 universities and research institutes in a series of such countries and areas as German, the United States, Canada, Australia, Holland, Sweden, Japan, Hong Kong, and etc. Honorary professorships, guest professorships and part-time professorships have been conferred to more than 20 national and foreign distinguished experts and scholars. Over 100 people have been sent abroad for long or short term visiting and study.
